I wanted to quit smoking, lose weight, and feel better, but it felt like too much to tackle on my own. When I heard hypnotherapy could help with stress and habits, I thought, Why not give it a try?”

After a few sessions, I didn’t even feel like I needed cigarettes anymore. I’ve been smoke-free ever since."

           "Overeating was tied to my emotions. I was eating to comfort myself, not because I was hungry. During hypnotherapy, I started to recognise those patterns and make better choices without feeling like I was depriving myself. It wasn’t about dieting, it was about feeling in control. I’ve lost over 9 kilos, and I actually enjoy eating healthier now. It’s been a game-changer."

          During the consultation, we explored James’s challenges and goals. He revealed subconscious beliefs, such as “I’m not good enough” and “If I fail, I’ll lose respect.” These beliefs fuelled his perfectionism and fear of risk, creating a cycle of avoidance and frustration leading to ongoing stress.  
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          2. Establishing a safe space
          &#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           : 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          In the first few sessions, we focused on relaxation techniques to help James enter a calm, focused state. Using guided visualisation, we created a "safe space" in his subconscious where he could explore his emotions without judgment.

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Every human is hard wired to survive and connect with others. Survival is our most powerful instinct and this is managed through our Autonomic Nervous System. If we feel unsafe or threatened our fight or flight survival response is triggered though the Sympathetic Nervous System, and stress hormones are released into our body. This provides us with the immediate resources to get out of danger.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Once the danger has gone, we can head back to the calm place where we feel safe and connected (Ventral Vagus System). It is normal to experience and move between these two states, strong resilience is built upon our ability to readily return to a calm state when there is no longer a threat.   
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          However, if a threat remains or as is more likely in our current world,
          &#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           we think it does
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
          , then we stay in this state of alert. This often becomes chronic stress and we remain this way until the body moves into the freeze response (Dorsal Vagal System) to preserve its remaining resources. It’s here that we often feel stuck, shut down emotionally, or fatigued.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          This is where developing your awareness comes in; what if you were able to notice these states and learn to take the path back to safety each time?

          When we feel safe and connected, the ventral vagal system is activated. This system promotes calm, social bonding, and engagement. It’s responsible for regulating heart rate, facial expressions, vocal tone, and other functions that help us connect and communicate with others. This in turn helps us co-regulate our emotions with everyone around us.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           How it feels:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
          When this system is dominant, we feel relaxed, calm, open, and connected to those around us. It’s essential for building trust and forming relationships. We feel compassionate to ourselves and others. Our cognitive brain is working at capacity, we are able to make considered decisions, freely access our creativity and manage frustrations. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Fight or flight (Danger)
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          We perceive danger or stress, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in to prepare the body for action, either to fight the threat or flee from it. This system speeds up the heart rate, increases adrenaline, and readies the body for a physical response.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           How it feels:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
          The activation of this system leads to feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, or agitation. It is the body’s way of responding to perceived threats by increasing arousal and mobilising energy for survival. Cognitive brain function slows, we no longer pick up voice sounds, our facial expressions signal danger to others, we’re ready to fight or flee and without knowing it are signalling this to everyone around us. This is a state of hyper-vigilance where we are especially sensitive to everything around us and cannot think rationally. 
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           Freeze (Threat) 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          We perceive the threat as overwhelming and there’s no escape, the dorsal vagal system takes over, leading to a “freeze” or shutdown response. This is the body’s way of conserving energy when in extreme distress or danger.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
           How it feels:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
          In this state, people may feel disconnected, numb, immobilised, or dissociated from their surroundings. It can manifest as feeling stuck, shut down emotionally, or fatigued.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Becoming aware of these states and how they feel to you is your starting point for moving forward in life, from here you can work out a way to find safety and make the calm place your dominant state.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           We are unable to control what happens around us, but being aware of what’s going on inside gives us a chance of noticing our emotional responses and finding our way back to safety each time - this is resilience. Learning and practicing mindfulness, specifically breathing exercises, and movement will help us return to safety.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Hypnotherapy is a great way to find your calm place, and from here identify and change those unhelpful triggers (mostly unhelpful thoughts) that prevent you from feeling safe. Once you develop this resilience it’s easier to make feeling safe your dominant state and live a better life.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

          Naming an anxiety helps reduce it by bringing the fear or worry into conscious awareness, which allows the brain to process it more rationally. This technique, often referred to as affect labeling, taps into how the brain works under stress. Here’s how it helps:
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;ol&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
          
             Emotional Regulation:
            &#xD;
        &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
        
            When you name an anxiety (e.g., “I am feeling anxious about my presentation tomorrow”), you engage the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for reasoning and decision-making. This reduces activity in the amygdala, which is responsible for triggering intense emotions like fear. By labeling the emotion, the brain shifts focus from the raw emotional reaction to a more measured, analytical processing of it
           &#xD;
      &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
          
             Sense of Control:
            &#xD;
        &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
        
            Naming the anxiety makes it feel more manageable because it shifts from being a vague, overwhelming sensation to a concrete issue that you can address. It’s easier to tackle something specific (“I’m anxious about being judged”) than a nameless dread.

             Validation and Acceptance:
            &#xD;
        &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
        
            Acknowledging the anxiety without judgment allows you to accept your feelings rather than suppress or avoid them. This leads to greater emotional self-awareness, which helps reduce the intensity of the emotion over time.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
          
             Detachment:
            &#xD;
        &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
        
            Naming the anxiety can create a psychological distance between you and the emotion. Instead of being consumed by it, you begin to see it as something separate from yourself, which can make it easier to deal with.

          Once you've named it try using A FROG to unpick those feelings and reframe your emotional response:

            - How do I feel as a result of this anxious thought?

           &#xD;

Start small and try and find some time at the beginning of each day, even if you have to get out of bed slightly earlier to find 5 minutes of space, this will help develop a consistent routine and over time reap noticeable benefits.

          Breathing exercises are an excellent place to start and the practice below will start to teach you to focus on your breath when you notice your stress levels increasing. It sounds simple because it is, and it really works.

            Sit comfortably with good posture. Looking ahead with a soft gaze, aware of everything above, below and to either side of you. Notice your feet on the ground, the weight of your body in the chair, and notice the sounds around you. Take three deep breaths and let your eyes close on the their exhale before following the exercise below:
           &#xD;
      &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        
            Exhale all of the air out of your lungs
           &#xD;
      &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;

      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        
            Inhale for 1,2,3,4
           &#xD;
      &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;

      &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
        
            Hold 1,2,3,4
           &#xD;
      &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;

            Exhale 1,2,3,4
           &#xD;
      &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;

            Repeat 10 times

          Focussing on your breath in this way will activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System and always help you find calm. Each time a thought pops into your mind, just notice it and let it go, coming back to your breathing each time. Learn to trust in letting those thoughts go, not judging them, or thinking of a resolution. JUST LET THEM GO and come back to your breath. It's not just Buddhist monks who start their practice this way, it's also a common technique used in martial arts and the Special Forces to boost resilience.

           The power of hypnosis lies in its ability to access and influence the subconscious mind, where many of our deep-seated beliefs, habits, and emotions are stored. In this altered state of consciousness, people become more open to suggestions and can experience profound mental and physical changes.

           How does it work?
          &#xD;

          When in a hypnotic state, brain activity often shifts from faster beta waves (associated with alertness and active thinking) to slower alpha or theta waves (associated with relaxation, meditation, and the dream state). These slower brainwaves are linked with heightened creativity, deep learning, and emotional healing. This altered state of consciousness allows access to subconscious processes that are not easily reached in a normal waking state.
         &#xD;

          Our subconscious controls many automatic processes in the body and mind, from habits to emotional responses.           Often, people resist change because their conscious mind creates barriers like fear or doubt. Hypnosis bypasses this resistance by working directly with the subconscious, making it easier to adopt new behaviours or mindsets. This is why hypnotherapy is often used to overcome addictions, bad habits, and fears.

           Is it safe?

          Hypnosis is a natural process, not too dissimilar from guided meditation, each person’s experience is different but you remain in control at all times and are able to interact with the therapist and your surroundings. Hypnosis can only address issues that you genuinely want to change, and while the subconscious is more receptive in this altered state, it will still resist suggestions that conflict with the desired therapeutic outcome.
         &#xD;

  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Hypnotherapy is often compared to stage hypnosis, which you’ve likely seen at some point. While the concepts share similarities, those participating in stage hypnosis have already consented to be part of the performance and are willing to entertain an audience. Though it may seem that the stage hypnotist has overridden their self-control, this isn’t the case, and participants still retain control over their actions.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;div&gt;&#xD;
    
          Whilst hypnosis is a powerful tool, it is not a “magic fix” and requires willingness to be hypnotised along with a readiness to embrace change. As a hypnotherapist registered with the National Hypnotherapy Society I work to a strict code of ethics and before any treatment commences a therapeutic plan is agreed with with you, identifying your goals and a clear plan of how they will be achieved.
